China's Seafood Market Makeover: Huangsha's New Era (2025)

Southern China's largest seafood market, the Huangsha seafood market in Guangzhou, will officially close its doors in October. This move marks the end of an era for the decades-old market, which has been a hub for seafood wholesale for over three decades. The market's closure is part of a broader transition to a new, state-of-the-art facility across the river, known as the Huangsha Seafood Center, which opened on September 8th.

The transition is not without challenges, as some vendors have yet to relocate due to various reasons, including the ongoing China's Golden Week holiday (October 1-8). To expedite the process, market operator Guangzhou Port Group has implemented a series of restrictive measures. Starting October 15th at 10:00 a.m., all seafood trading vehicles, including logistics and wholesale trucks, will be barred from entering the old market.

From October 22nd, further restrictions will be enforced, including limits on water supply and the closure of facilities. The operator will cease all services, and vendors will be required to settle rent and utility fees up to September 30th and complete exit procedures. After October 15th, no business operations will be permitted.

Guangzhou Port Group has announced a strict "no entry, only exit" policy to ensure a clean break from seafood wholesale activities at the old market site. The Huangsha Market has been a bustling hub, hosting over 200 varieties of fresh and live seafood from more than 20 countries, with an annual trading volume exceeding 270,000 metric tons and a transaction value of more than CNY 10 billion ($1.39 billion).

This closure and transition represent a significant shift in the region's seafood trade, and the new Huangsha Seafood Center is poised to become the main trading venue for the area.
